    Hello

On Saturday evening my wife was driving to the shops when the car suddenly started to make a loud howling sound (something like woooooo) getting louder as she accelerated. The car also last power and turbo boost.
It also howls in idle when I depress the accelerator. There doesn't appear to be any smoke out of the exhaust or engine.
The car is a VW Golf MK5 (55 plate) and only done 37000 careful miles.

I haven't been able to take it to the garage yet and am frightened to drive it. I'm hearing stories that it may be broken turbo blades from one person and exhaust leak from another.

Does anyone know what it might be? I'm worried that I have to replace the turbo as I believe this is very very expensive.
Surely the turbo shouldn't just go without warning and after so little mileage and on a VW!

    Thanks in advance
    Vic

I feared that. Do you know where's the best place to get another turbo - GFS are looking for £700? Also, how much would it normally be to fit? I just want to be armed with some info before approaching a garage.

    many thanks
    Vic

If it is the turbo, contact Jason @ All German Parts, ( one of our forum sponsers.)

    http://www.allgermanparts.co.uk/

    All German Parts Limited
    16 Pontefract Road

    United Kingdom

    Telephone: 0113 2775245

    E-Mail: sales@allgermanparts.co.uk

Mention The forum and i have reffered you, he will beat the price of GSF.

The problem with running the car is you dont want the turbo to break up and send scrap metal into the block.

Before buying a turbo, get the car checked, if you have a split vacum hose it can give the same feeling that a turbo has failed and the "woooo" can be it sucking in air.

    Cheers

    Rick

I mentioned the forum and your name.
It is original equipment with a VAG MRP of £1115.15 + vat.

Maybe GFS isn't, but does it really matter, i still get a year's warranty.

I've just spoken to the garage and they're not convinced that it is a knackered turbo - i'm going to tow the car to the garage tonight and let them check it over.

Ah... If its an OEM part that is are good price, the GSF ones will be aftermarket and may even be re-conn's.

I would go OEM if required.

Let us know the outcome after the garage have looked at it,

    Rick

If you do need a new turbo I would strongly suggest getting an OEM one. I recently tried the seemingly cheaper option by buying an aftermarket unit for my 2.0TDI Passat and am having terrible problems. I've sent one back as it arrived damaged and the newer one is giving me terrible overboost problems.

I'm sorry I didnt just bite the bullet and go for the genuine one. It would have saved me money and hassle in the long run.

Hopefully you will get away without a new turbo, but if you do need one, consider the OEM route.
