It needs to be dark and of course the lights need to be bright in your rear vision. It works really well .... unless you've got tinted windows

You can tell if its working as the lights in your mirror have a greenish tint to them.... but only if they are bright and fairly close..............

But, it does work!! I have only just realised that I have'nt noticed being dazzled by any lights and in my old car, I was constantly dipping the mirror at night............ so it must be working!!

I have been having some doubts about the effectiveness of my rear view mirror.
I have moved from a Passat which did not have the facility to be turned off, but it worked much more noticeably than the A4's mirror.
Using my son's car, which has Zenon lights I have tested my mirror and there is little difference with the mirror switched on or off, either way I am dazzled.
I don't have privacy glass, which I have heard can effect the opperation, so it looks like a trip to the dealers.
I can see it being hard to prove though.

    Weird, mine is very noticeable.

At night and with cars close(ish) behind me, the mirror (and wing mirrors) all dim to a greenish tint except the outer few mm (probably 5mm or so around the wing mirrors), so it's very obvious. I'd actually like mine to be less sensitive as I feel it dims a little too easily sometimes.

I can also see the edge of the dimming section if I look closely at the mirrors in the light.

Agreed. When mine does dim it's pretty obvious.

If you hold your finger over the sensor on the back (top-left corner I think), then you will see it dimming until you remove your finger again.
