brake pad replacement

Hi Guys,

Went to replace my tyres today, and the tyre place said my front brake pads were low, he said its almost metal to metal. Im wondering why my brake light warning hasn't shown up on my dash to indicate this (is this warning only available on the higher end models, mines a basic model)

The garage quoted me £60inc for the front pads, is this reasonable or is it too cheap? I don't need anything fancy, I quite like the braking performance I currently have which I "presume" is the original OEM....although wouldn't know if they'd been changed?

Well Audi charge £99 fitted so bearing in mind that they charge an arm and a leg per hour I would say 60 isnt bad. I think the pads are around 30 so 30 quid for fitting them seems fair. Just ask them what pads they would be fitting and do a little research on those pads. i know a lot of folks use green stuff pads.

ATE, Paget or Textar, are the most common and better quality pads to use on German cars.

My favourite though have to be Ferodo.

Just asked the garage,

The brand they use is Aut-X, he said they were made by ferodo? Anyone have any experience with these. Asked another garage, and they use APEC, and they come in at a similar price.

Is there that much of a difference between quality (Im happy to pay more if there is, as safety comes first, but not really a boy racer

)

Found a place which do mintex for £65 fitted - so gonna go with them, also rang around found could get the Apec ones fitted for £45, but after googleing, a few reviews/forums 'put me off'.

i just bought mintex discs and pads for the front and back of the 20v turbo for £119, which i didnt think was too bad, i rate mintex, had them on a couple of cars and there great for the money

as regards the matter of brake wear warning light, many cars these days only have wear indicators on one side of the car,( my bora has only nearside warning),
i suppose it's reasonable to assume that both sides should wear equally, unless a calliper sticks, and so it could be said that this layout should provide adequate
warning?

just to change subject slightly, im gonna fit new dics and pads all round on my 2000 20v turbo a3 this weekend, a friend of mine mentioned i may need a special tool for the rears, anyone hear shed any light on this?
