Or should I just get the RCD510 and spend a couple of hundred on a decent TomTom?

Tom Tom. You can download, install and set alarms for thousands of POI's - speed cameras, petrol stations, Tesco, lapdancing clubs, whatever floats your boat. This makes it more useful than a SatNav system for 90% of the time.

Also, can the RNS510 deal with 6 digit postcodes yet? It's predecessor could only do 4 digits, which meant it was pants.

in my opinion the sat nav is the best added extra in my car - well worth it. it function really wel with the highline and the live traffic updates as well as the HDD. i would def recommend it, and all of my friends who saw the car says the same

my car is 1.4 tsi 122SE with luxury pack, RNS510, MFSW, Storage pack, FTI, Park assist with rear view camera

Can you enter a UK postcode quickly as a destination? That's how I generally use sat-navs; if it's not possible it makes it less useful for me.

i used tom tom before , and it works differently. to answer your question, it is really easy to find any UK destination once you get used to the system, and does not take longer than Tom Tom to find a destination, BUT it does not accept full UK postcode. one way to do it is to enter the first half of the postcode, then the couple first letters of the street and the system will find it very quickly.
. honestly, i think its worth it. you have other features and options that you dont get with the tom tom. and the fact that all the instruction are n the Highline, and the screen is bigger makes driving a lot more comfortable.

if you in doubt though try out the system at VW show rooms before you order - (like i did)

the only issue i have with it is that unlike tom tom, it does not recognize the London Congestion Charge as a Toll Charge Zone with an option to avoid

You must remember that the RNS510 is far more than purely a satnav.

I find it superb and it removes the hassle of wires to the lighter, hiding the base when you leave the car and the general theft issue.

True tomtom is so much cheaper but you do get the addition of the climate display on the touchscreen (if climate specced) and the parking sensor display (if specced).

You cant input a 6 digit postcode but this really doesnt matter as its so easy to use even entering 4 digits. The voice is clear (male or female option), it recognises one way streets and has a superb high zoom down to 25 yards.

You also get the highline computer as part of the package which gives you numerous extra features and provides a satnav readout showing direction, distance to next turn, road name/number etc.

The 40GB hard drive also allows for music to be downloaded etc.

You can also watch DVDS when static (if you really want to!) and I can vouch that the display has superb clarity.

It is a lot of money and if the budget is tight then its probably not really an option but if you have the money, its a private not company car, you're keeping the car a while, use the car a lot, and need satnav then I can highly recommend it.

Buy one from Ebay (or the like) for 500 quid, that makes it much closer to the Tom Tom in price terms.

I can recommend the seller "auto_navi_parts_123", bought my RCD-510 from them. It came very well packaged and is in cosmetically perfect condition. It looks brand new.

Sadly my car will be a company car so I'd end up paying about 80% of the cost of the satnav and not getting to keep it. Second issue is that I would love the DAB radio - mostly for 5 Live in the evenings. I drive from Cheshire to Hampshire midweek evenings quite often and a listenable footy game would make it a lot more pleasant! My current golf is a 2006 SE (Match) with both sets of speakers upgraded, but the sound is still unimpressive. Will the RCD510 without Dynaudio sound noticeably better? (Sorry to drift topic a bit).
