Sorry you can't get a definitive answer on this Stuart. I can only speak from my own experience with factory-fit rear sensors on my previous A6, where the only solution seemed to be to replace the offending sensor. As far as I'm aware, the dealer didn't need to take the bumper off to do the replacement (although I didn't oversee the job - just left the car with them for an hour - the new sensor had been previously painted). If I were you I'd investigate how much a new sensor will cost, then weigh up whether you think it's worth a) leaving the system as it is, b) risking disconnecting the offending sensor and trying the system, or c) fitting a new sensor.
Whichever option you go for, let us know how it goes...
