My main computer has gone ****-up so i've been relegated to my old dell with a 2.6Ghz P4 512Mb of ram and crappy old graphics card. As it had no operating system on it i decided to try Redhat linux to see what it's like.

    What a mistake!!

It's bloody awful. It's just taken me nearly 6 hours to get it to connect to the internet. You've got to go to a command prompt to install anything (including updates) and woe betide anyone who wants to view any web pages with video or fancy graphics.

Never again will i slag off Microsoft or Bill Gates. If this is the competition it's not microsofts fault it dominates the market like it does!!

Sorry, rant over I'm off to find my old copy of win2k to install before i break this computer too!!

What's the best processor / mobo to go for at the minute (can't live without my games )

I would try freeBSD or ubuntu, allot easier to get on with, but with all these linux versions, you do need to be a bit of a geek...and remember you've had years to get used to the microsoft platforms!!

I would not install w2k your better of with XP and it will work well on your P4 with 512. your main bottleneck on you computer is the hard disk as its probabley not a SATA drive.

I have an ASUS Laptop with Core 2 Duo 1.83Ghz and Vista Ultimate...works great but only since i added 2Gb of RAM!!

Well, i've installed Win2k and the only problem i had was with network card drivers which was quickly rectified with a root through my old disks for the drivers.

Yeah it's a bit basic looking but it's very fast. The graphics card is a geforce 4 mx which is rubbish but since it's agp a half decent new one should only be about £30. Gonna get a KVM switch from work and run 2 computers now. One for playing games and this one for Storing and playing all my mp3's.

Have decided to go for a e6600 core2duo but am undecided as to which mobo. I had to import my old mobo from Atelco in Germany as no-one else in Europe sold them at the time (£205!!) but i was in Iraq and was getting paid loads so thought what the hell. Won't make that mistake again though. Gonna try to get the most future proof kit i can afford this time. I've got 2Gb of ram and the Graphics card will have to do for another month at least so it's just a new processor and mobo

    Let the shopping begin

I'm a little confused. Are you intending to use an AGP card in the new mobo, or buy a PCI-e card for it? Nice processor you're going for. As for the card, think about a 7600GT. It's a cracking card for the money now. Mine was £175 last year and now you can get them for about £50! Foxconn mobo's are nice...

The AGP card is for the old pc, just to keep it at least a wee bit up to date. The e6600 seems to be just below where the price starts to outweigh the performance gains. Will probably buy mobo and processor this month and get the rest next month if i need it.

All i need to do now is search out a suitable motherboard. Had a look for 7600gt's and oh my god is it confusing. There's cards with the same names that have wildly different prices. Turns out this is down todifferent core and memory speeds so you really need to look into the individual specs of all of them. Time to start reading through my old PC Formats for their reviews

It is what you get used too. For me I used SunOS and Solaris for years when windows were just for looking outside , Windows was a complete PITA at first and lets face it Win 9x was never fit for purpose it was down more times than up . I have now got used to it in the last 7 years and XP is superb.

As mentioned different Linux distributions have different characteristics. You have to find one that suits. We use SuSE Linux at work on a couple of servers, although I am a UNIX admin I hated it to start with. That was 9 months ago. I like it now.

I used to admin RedHat about 3 years ago, but I think with the exception of Solaris SuSE is the one
    One German, Two Italian.
    It's a Mercedes Benzzzz though

Got ubuntu on a machine at work we made up from spares. Is far superior to Redhat but when you're used to windows Linux/unix tends to get on your nerves as it just seems so un-user friendly. All our systems at work are windows clients with a mix of windows and Unix servers so 99% of the time i'm working on windows
