Front wheel Rumble

Girlfriend owns a 99 passat 1.8 20v, she asked me to check a 'noise' out on her 59000 miler and I can only describe it as a rumble from the front wheel area. It only happens when warm and it deffo isnt gearbox/clutch as I just let the car roll down a hill without these engaged and its still there.
Tried the full lock and going round in circles stunt as well no knocking heard so dont think its CV fault
I think its a wheel bearing but as ive never had one go im sorta blind....am I right?

Oh and I forgot to say it starts as a creak when you take off...not literally, but girlfriend said with stopping and starting(M1) it gets to be more of a clunk.

Sounds like a wheel bearing that has gone quite badly. Get it to a garage soon and try not to drive it. A friend of mine had a complete wheel bearing failure and the wheel was sliding in and out of the hub! It happened on the motorway and nearly caused a crash, don't let this car get that bad.
