I have a 2005 passat 2.0tdi se and on a cold start up it misfires once and the emissions warning light comes on.(orange symbol) Also whilst running at around 1800rpm its a little "lumpy". I took to my local garage but they couldn't diagnose the fault . They didn't have a VAG diagnostic machine though! They advised me to let it get worse then bring it back but is seems to have stayed the same. Its been like it for several months now but I've not done lot of miles in it since the problem started. I've considered taking it to a dealer in order to get it on a VAG diagnostic machine but I'm loathed to pay £80+ per hour for the privilage and to potentially not resolve the problem.

Any suggestions what the problems may be?

Take it to a garage that has vag-com. Sounds like the injector loom is failing. Could be a faulty injector which is not good knows. How on earth do your local garage expect to repair VAG cars without the right tools. You can't fix modern cars without diagnostics.

Took to the dealer garage who diagnosed it with a faulty fuel temperature sensor within 5 mins. Apparently its not an uncommon fault.

it fixed it for me but I would still recommend that you get a diagnostic check carried out first to find out what the problem actually is as it could be a number of things. I would also recommened going to a dealer or VW specialist as I went to my local garage to start with but they couldn't find the problem. I reckon it was because they didn't have a VAG diagnostic machine but I still had to pay for an hours labour. I then took it to the main dealer and they located the problem in 5mins and repaired it there and then in 30mins so in the long run it was probably more cost effective.
