I have been using the 409.1 freeware version of VAGCOM on my 98 Sharan for a few years now with no probs and have just bought a 2001 Polo 1.4 16v. The problem I have is that when I plug into the Polo it refuses to talk to the engine controller but other units it has no probs with i.e. ABS controller.
    So is it either:-
    A) need to change the Baud rate on the laptop to a different setting for each car

    or more worringly
    B)a problem with the Polo?

Try changing the baud rate. This is a problem that Ross-Tech faced in designing our interfaces. The inexpensive interfaces cannot adapt to different rates of control modules. So, you can have a play with the baud rate to see if you can get reliable comms. Then you will need to change it for your other car.

There are not many Baud Rate settings between you may need to switch, however if you are using our genuine hardware (HEX, HEX+CAN, KEY/KII) you will not have that issue because the baud rate is automatically detected.

There's a note about that on our website...

    http://www.ross-tech.com/vag-com/issues.html

If when you try to connect to a control module, you get the error message "Can't Synch Baud Rate", go to the Options Screen and try setting the Start Baud to 9600. If 9600 doesn't work, also try 4800 and 1200. Turn the car's ignition OFF and back ON after each failed attempt to connect!
