Just wondered if anyone is prepared to confess to advanced muppetry as per Steve Wright in the Afternoon?

I suffer from auto hypochondria. Every noise from the car I see as a prelude to an imminent 4 figure bill. The other day, got in the car and it stank. I'm thinking air con, heater matrix etc etc. Mats out, pulling up carpet. Switching air con on and off. Even getting my wife to come out round the block as I tried to nail the fault.

Solution - **** covered walking boots left in car boot since last Thursday.

I'm with you on that. And, of course, once I think there's a problem everything is suddly related to it. Slight noise, then there's a bit of hesitation in the throttle, then another odd noise, economy's down on what I was expecting = OMG the engine's about to die...

Not, slight noise heard because I've turned the radio down and can now hear something that awlays made a noise, hesitation in the throttle being down to new shoes, then changed driving technique making something else that makes a noise more prelavent, driving down the econony at the same time = nothing to worry about.

    OMG! you just described me!

I've developed the ability to hear dash rattles even when the radio is cranked up. I'm sure there is an official condition for being paranoid about one's car.

    It's not a condition, it's normal....

Yep, have an endless list of things going to go wrong. Starting to get paranoid about every new rattle or noise

Try driving a 23 and 20 year old Golf! Every croak and groan and rattle and judder seems to be different. You never know if the car is about to shake itself to bits or is just clearing its throat haha.

My blood pressure has increased tenfold since owning these things I swear!

Ha ! I got a 16 year old LT van. Can't hear a bomb going off when you are in that. The rattles, bangs, squeaks & groans cover up all other sounds.
