Collected few weeks ago after almost 3months wait via scrappage scheme.

Overall i'm very impressed considering its only an S model - smooth quiet refined drive, good interior and build quality, handles well ...........just need a decent set of alloys to finish it off.

    Looks great mate !

All you need know is a set of 18" to complete the look, lots around i like the pheaton alloys on the mk6, will look great with the candy white

Those light steel rims and high profile tyres are good for comfort and unsprung mass. Big wheels are fine for looks or for fitting big brakes, but are so wrong in many ways for suspension control.

Well said, so, perhaps it would be best to go for the optional 15in alloys which would further reduce unsprung mass (due to alloy being lighter than the steel) whilst retaining the higher profile tyre. Normally I am happy to run a car with wheel trims but I have to say that these are the first wheel trims fitted on a Golf in recent years that I find unpleasant. Too fussy a design I think. Hopefully they will change them for a future model year.

Don't assume that light alloy wheels are any lighter than a steel wheel, to achieve the same strength alloy wheels can be a lot thicker, so overall no better. Alloy does give more scope with design of course. I watched a good set of 15" Wellington alloys and Tyres from a mk5 car sell for £118 on the bay last week, so it's easy to find some suitable and factory wheels for little money. Even 16s can be had for under £300 with useable Tyres.

I've spec'd 17s so mine will be different to a lot of se's on the road. I accept the wheel weights might be a negative step but at least this option comes with sports suspension so is hopefully somewhat tuned to the wheels.

We did a big exercise on one of the Porsche forums and found the 17s to be .5 to1Kg lighter than any of the 18s or 19" options with tyres fitted. 1kg on a 20kg wheel n tyre combo is significant
