    Hi,

I bought a Dec 2003 Audi A4 Avant 1.9tdi 6 speed 2 months ago in a private sale. Everything checked out and car was running well.

This morning I suddenly got a massive rattling noise and the garage had to come and pick up car. They phoned to say gearbox was shot as it would not go into 3rd or 4th and I may as well replace clutch while I am it.

Trying to source a replacement gearbox now but not having much luck - would really appreciate any tips and also any advice as to how much an Audi garage would charge for this work?

    Really appreciate any help,

    Paul

That sounds strangely like a multi-chronic - from the way the op put it - it sounded like a manual......incidentally, if that is multi-chronic, I feel much less worried about replacement costs now......if mine goes pop again that is :-)

Sorry to be so clueless guys but as far as I am aware its a 6 speed manual. What is multitronic?

Is that the price for a new gearbox pack?

Considering putting the car into an audi garage but fear it may cost me a small fortune.

Sourced a new clutch for £150 and a 2nd hand gearbox with 3 month warranty for £600 does that sound like a good deal?

Appreciate the replies, thank you again.

Technically a multi-tronic is not an auto - as an automatic gearbox is of a different design. Also, it is not recorded as Automatic by the DVLA, as a CVT is treated as a manual in their eyes. I queried this at *great* length when I got mine as the car data check, V5, and everything said it was a Manual, but most insurers say it's an auto.

See - even insuring one is as complex as the gearbox itself!!

Does the CVT mean that it has one big conical gear.. i.e no stepped gears..

OR have I just won the dumbest question of the year award?

It actuall has 4 conical discs, 2 at each end, with a chain running between them. When the discs are pushed towards each other the ratio of the chain drive changes.

Technically the CVT Multritronic is a variator and not a transmission at all, similar to those found in 50cc scooters, etc.

Thank for all the replies and info guys.

Sorry to bring it back to the original question but does anyone have any info as to the cheapest and best way to source a replacement gearbox and new clutch? I think my gearbox code is FYA but struggling to source a replacement at a sensible price.

    Thanks again for the help.
