I think the Captain has the Answer a wise man indeed.

I have never hung out washing in my life. At home we have never had a washing line, not ever. I am separated from Mrs QV and living at my parents now, my mummy has a washing line, though I iron I do not hang out washing, no sir. When my situation is resolved I will have a tumble dryer again along with a dishwasher.
There is something rather unseemly about hanging out underwear, a little bit like women being allowed in the club house bar...
You may think I'm being helpful yet sarcastic, this is only because I feel I need to help you to help yourself in the future

My missus was surprised I hung out underwear on the line when we first moved in.
"But the neighbours will see it" she protested.
"What, and I'll shatter their illusions that I go around commando?" I asked.

I bet none of yours has been stolen from the line by some weirdo (possible unnamed VWAF member)

Getting caught with female undergarments in ones hand is embarrassing in itself. Its the bloody security lights that concern me. Then theres the hedge/ fence/gate issue and of course the dog has to be considered
As an added bonus I always have a large collection of pegs.
