have had my 07 2.0T fsi for 3 weeks now and generally i am very pleased with it. Nice and smooth and plenty of go when you need it.

However i have read on the What Car website on used a4 B7's that there can be gearbox issues.

The problem i am experiencing is that it is quite stiff to select first gear when stationary after having depressed the clutch, and its slightly baulky when selecting 2nd but once on the move and when you select 1st whilst moving it is generally fine.

Do any of you experts on here have any thoughts on what you think it maybe, Do any of the 2.0Tfsi owners have the same problem? Is the petrol 6 speed the same as the diesel?

The Audi dealer says they have not seen problems like this before which is a surprise bearing in mind What Car report this as a fairly common problem.
If i could go to the dealer with some idea of what it might be instead of the clutch i feel i am in a more informed position to argue my point!!

This is common complaint as the box is notchy but in certain cases I have replaced the clutch,I would advise you consider comparing to another to push the case with the dealer because warranty will not pay out for a clutch unless it consequential damage from say a flywheel failure however wear and tear policy allows such claims were it can be proven the clutch is defective from normal use

Thats useful thanks, but unfortunately as i have not owned it from new i cannot guarantee that the clutch wear is not due to abuse, but surely it would be more obvious in the other gears if someone had been burning the clutch out etc. Problem is dealer whats 2 hrs labour to strip gearbox and clutch if it turns out to be the clutch wear? I have a family member who works at Seat dealers who would repair the clutch cheaper than Audi despite being the same parts. Is to strip it out the only way to tell what it might be?

Your problem is the clutch as the gears are fine without the engine running.Labour costs for R+I 4.9 hours, IF THE 1ST/2ND gear synchro was worn then the selection would be worse and its unlikely and uncommon unless the gearbox has covered lots of miles plus downshifting would also highlight the fault.I have changed the oil from synthetic to hypoid for similar complaints and the cause can be described as aquaplaning caused by the oil viscosity but this sounds like poor coefficient of the friction plate when compressed.

When I first got mine, its a B6 I complained about the gearchange to the dealer so much that they changed the 'box twice.
I then test drove a brand new B7 and the change was the same, actully as the mileage has gone on I think the gearchange has gor smoother.

There is one other adjustment which can reduce this and its crude but affective.
Pre aging the gear by force and it works a treat.

    Hi All,
I have an Audi 2007 A4 S-Line Avant 6 speed manaul and am having trouble with my gears.. Mine has a little over 67000 miles on the clock and about 3 months ago I noticed that when I changed gears 1st , 2nd and 3rd I could hear what I can only describe as a grinding/crunching sound. I have spoke to Audi Aylesbury but not very helpful as usual. I have been told it could be a change of gearbox oil might sort it or it could be the clutch plate or the sincro (not sure of correct spelling) between gears by differet mechanics. Again its going to a local garge to test drive tomorrow (22-6-11).My biggest problem is it doesnt happen all the time (80% of the time when driven) The car is fully serviced and just passed its MOT. Im not a hard driver. If anybody has had this issue with a manual gearbox or has come accross a solution I would very much appreciate any advice…
    Best Regards,
    Kev

Hi matt sline.Reading thorough your comments there I realised you have the same problems as I do.altough mine's a diesel(5speed gearbox)I have the same symptoms;1st gear hard to engage but if selected once I'm on the move it's ok and 2nd gear allways notchy. And after almost 3 years I've decided to take it to a garage and get it looked at.Initially I asked them to replace the gearbox oil but they phone me back to say that it would just be a waste of money and the only solution for my problem would be a new clutch kit.Paid the garage 620£ for a new clutch kit and guess what....NO DIFFERENCE WHATSOEVER.i went mad when I picked the car up.if I were you I would just try and change the oil inside the gearbox first and take it from there.Clutches are very expensive and in my case it didn't help at all.I will be changing my gearbox oil next month I will let you know what results I get.

I have a similar issue on mine. If I accelerate hard in 1st and do a normal gear change to 2nd it will often crunch slightly. I dont know about changing into 1st as my old BMW used to have issues sometimes changing down when stationary so I have got into the habit of changing just as the car is coming to the final stop.
