What do you get for £1750 .What is the mod, Gears?
If I change oil at 6000 miles will that help my engine not to go bang.

It has 82k on it and has just passed MOT so is Oct 2005 modelStill in shock to be honest and not long after replacing the air con compressor.......
Uh, my engine is loud to. Just like you said (generator like sound).
Just checked with my friend having a Audi A4 Avant 2.0TDI BRE engine (my is BLB ) and engine sound is so different.
Today when i get home from work (graveyard shift), i'll visit local Audi service and ask them what should i do.
I hope there is a way to change the hex drive shaft and parts included before oil pump breaks and kill's turbo.
And i bought my Audi A4 Avant because it had only 55000km.
I thought it will be problem free...
Oh wait, there is more... I have it only 21 days, bought it on my birthday...

Is it possible to upload short (engine) sound clip direct on forum or should i upload somewhere else and post link to the file?

P.S.: I'll post results from "Audi service" meeting.

    Hi all,
I am also in the same dilemma,I have a Jan '06 A4 2.0 ltr TDI with the BLB engine now with 91000 miles on the clock.I've had it now for 6 months of trouble free motoring, engine runs and idles smoothly but am slightly worried about all the horror stories I read about these engines. What I would like to know is it a question of maybe or when the oil pumps pack in or are there any other members out there with the same engine with large mileage covered trouble free (120k + ).I assume any replacement of oil pump/balance shaft is now done with gears and not chain drive.Any advice please.

Just came home from local Audi service and made an appointment on tuesday at 8.00am.
They told me that I will need about 2h and me and their mechanic will take a closer look and listen to the engine.
Today I will record how my engine sound and upload it somewhere.

    Hi Guys,

I had the balance shaft scare earlier in summer and suppose I was lucky- it was diagnosed as the air con pump (Common fault - should have been recalled or at least replaced FOC - Quoted £850).
Have just spent over £2k getting gearbox sorted after Audi refused warranty on a box with only 30k miles on it. £80 for Air Con pump diagnosis and £100 for gearbox diagnosis????? - charged a fortune for Audi to tell me that their product is not fit for purpose

Don't think I can afford to keep this car much longer - only 60k miles '05 - after paying for a quality car, disappointment is too mild a word . . . . Strongly considering some legal advice!

Today when I get to work, i'll record my friends engine sound too (BRE type).
Already done with recording my engine (BRB type). Links will be posted when i'll have both sounds.
I realy hope it's not oil pump shaft... fingers crossed.

P.S.: Here is link to both recordings, BLB & BRE engine.
    http://rapidshare.com/files/30021068...soundclips.zip

BLB has 55600km & BRE has 144000km. BRE engine is just for comparison.

    Hi Guys

Thanks for all your useful info.I have had a second opinion from a technician with 30 yrs VW/Audi experience. He immediately diagnosed the small belt pulley at the front of the engine which is lying off line and not straight/flush with the engine. I hope to have it rectified this week and fingers crossed it will cure the noise and will rule out the balance shaft problem, for now!

    I'll keep you posted......Here's hoping!
