    Hi
I am wondering at what RPM is best to shift the gear to have longlife for engine, turbo and gear?
I am reading and talking with people ,and there is the conclusions that I get:

    I have Audi A4 Avant 1.9 tdi 96 kw, 6 gear, 2004 year, 148000 km behind,
When the car is cold I am not passing more than 1900 RPM to shift the gear, pressing accelerator very slowly and driving as higher gear as posible and riding on abt 1500 RPM. When the engine is warm ,on 90 C, then I am accelerating faster but not with full accelerator and shifting the gear on abt 2200 to 2500 RPM and keeping abt 2000 RPM, that I am doing in town, but out of town accelerating even faster and shifting the gear up to 2500-3000 RPM and cruising on 1900-2200 RPM, of course at higher gear as posible. On the hills I like to rev up engine with full accelerator on higher gear, and not less than 2000 RPM to go. With this style the consumption of diesel is satisfactory, in town is going from 7 to 9 liters per 100km, outside is going from 5 to 6 litres per 100km.
Before I had a Passat with 1.9 tdi PD 85 kw, in begining I drove it like grandfather, and after 40000km I had problem with turbo and the mechanics told me that my style of driving caused that problem.
So I would like to know your experience and advices.

    1) Put pedal to carpet
    2) Wait to see RPM inidcator meet the Red Line
    3) Change

    Hope that helps

Agreed, although it's always fun to wait for the RPM indicator to bounce off the red line at least five times before you change when the car isn't yours.

Considering selling my VCDS KEY-USB interface. If you're interested please contact me via PM or email.

I've got the Golf 2.0 GT TDI, I tend to change up at aroub 1800-2000.

Every so often, maybe once a fortnight I gun it a bit more and change up between 2500-3000rpm. The problem is that at those revs I'm usually getting to dangerously illegal speeds!

More so if it is... particularly when you're about to sell it

Everyone make a note not to let anyone from the forum drive your car.

500 revs into the torque band is good for power and economy.

It sounds better shifting at 5k+ rpm anyway.

Somtimes I cruise around at 5k in first gear for fun.

    Global warming who?

On a serious note, around 2k for petrol. Really depends on the car. How long is a piece of string?

Be warned though, if you granny your car all the way, it wont be very clean inside. Its always good to make it sweat a little to work off the fatty buildup!
    Current: Golf VI 1.4 TSI

    Past: (Beloved) Mk3 "1.6" - 184 k miles. Now a cube in scrapyard heaven :'(

    I need all your V-Powers.
