just to put a little more light on this matter with an isue i had,
i have a 2006 golf gti regier and all was fine untill i gave the car an extended high speed run i got up to 172mph and i developed a hummmm, i quickly knocked the car into neutral and the noise went.... i presumed this was a gearbox prob for a split second,,,,, as i cruised in neutral back down to 70 the noise came back and didnt go away again i drove home and the next day assesed the fault....
my 2 front tyres were stepped on the inside ever so slightly and i mean next to nothing, we got the car on the ramps and there was no noise so i was convinced the fault was with the tyres....
i changed the tyres (my car came standard with 19" rims so that wasnt cheap)
the noise was still there,
the noise was evident from 25mph upwards just like so many threads on here blah blah blah...
it turned out that both front wheel bearings were shot 1 completelly and one only just...
so bear this post in mind when you get the noise i was adiment it was something else as the noise does not apear to come from one wheel or another.
