    Morning all,

So i have a GTI and i've been getting a noise coming from the car for a while, and i just want to make sure other people get it.

So it starts at about 25 MPH, and is linked to the car moving, its not engine based. The only way i can describe it is by saying imagine you have a flat spot on a tyre, so you get a "werr......werr.....werr......werr.....werr" noise, obviously as you go quicker it gets quicker to the point that when you get to about 40 it then dissappears or more likely, it goes so quick its just turning into a constant hum that the road noise hides.

Does anyone else get this? And what is it?

    Cheers

    Mike

Can you hear where its coming from? right side? left side? front-back ect......

Dont know why but i say cv joints, they usually make a squeak kinda noise hmmm. If its to do with movement then the wheels or that area of wheels would be my first thought.

i'd say front, but doesn't seem to come from a specific side of the car, it seems to start up when the car is going quick enough to generate some road noise.

There also doesn't seem to be any affect to the handling of the car, and theres no obvious affect through the steering wheel or pedals.

Sorry should probably say it a DSG gearbox!

Tyre and wheel bearing noise is common on the Golf 5. Sometimes it is one of the wheel bearings, front or rear-all are a common failure, sometimes a faulty tyre and occasionally on models with the two piece right hand drive shaft, the centre support bearing for the shaft. The only way to tell is to get it up in the air and listen for wheel bearing noise, check the tires, listen to the bearing etc.

On the topic of strange noises - I have a 1.4 GT TSi Sport (140), just over 2 years old, when you floor the accelerator from mid revs in 2-6 gear you get a short "squeeking" noise just before the turbo kicks in. Mentioned it during my last service, the dealer advised that it was a problem Volkswagen were aware off but didn't know how to fix? Doesn't really effect the performance other than (I think) slightly increasing the lag of the turbo, just a wee bit annoying!
