just to put a little more light on this matter with an isue i had,
i have a 2006 golf gti regier and all was fine untill i gave the car an extended high speed run i got up to 172mph and i developed a hummmm, i quickly knocked the car into neutral and the noise went.... i presumed this was a gearbox prob for a split second,,,,, as i cruised in neutral back down to 70 the noise came back and didnt go away again i drove home and the next day assesed the fault....
my 2 front tyres were stepped on the inside ever so slightly and i mean next to nothing, we got the car on the ramps and there was no noise so i was convinced the fault was with the tyres....
i changed the tyres (my car came standard with 19" rims so that wasnt cheap)
    the noise was still there,
the noise was evident from 25mph upwards just like so many threads on here blah blah blah...
it turned out that both front wheel bearings were shot 1 completelly and one only just...
so bear this post in mind when you get the noise i was adiment it was something else as the noise does not apear to come from one wheel or another.

On the topic of strange noises - I have a 1.4 GT TSi Sport (140), just over 2 years old, when you floor the accelerator from mid revs in 2-6 gear you get a short "squeeking" noise just before the turbo kicks in. Mentioned it during my last service, the dealer advised that it was a problem Volkswagen were aware off but didn't know how to fix? Doesn't really effect the performance other than (I think) slightly increasing the lag of the turbo, just a wee bit annoying!

I also have exactly the same problem. My mechanic has spotted the uneven type wear and suggests that the rear shocks are to blame. The inside of the types has subtle ribs worn Into them which causes the low speed noise. The high need noise caused by the wheel bouncing.
I am off to change the shocks today and swap the tyres around ( can't bring myself to bin tyres with plenty of tread )

Update - my mechanic phoned vw dealer to order shocks ... vw said it was not the shocks(despite 4 part number changes) but a “characteristic” of the car….. So we swapped the front and back tyres in the hope that they would wear more evenly on the front. Two weeks later and noise cured at back but still a horrible din from the front like driving on corrugated roads despite enthusiastic ‘esp off’ driving.
May be those tyres should be in the bin.

Oh they are good year eagles(original spec on new car) – which are susceptible to this vw say

Is anyone else running these good year tyres?

Has anyone else got tyre brands on the rear which have proven resistant to this characteristic?

I started using GoodYear Optigrip's on my TDI 170 - problem solved, a complete set spread up the A34 and M40 and all fine over the last 18 months. I personally think the Potenza RE050's are not a good tyre - the Goodyears are far better in the wet when your life depends on it 8-)

Passat 3C rear tyre noise, common. Try changing the rear camber to the new settings.
