    Hi All

I am selling my car and someone wants to buy it tomorrow bt it has my private plate still on. I do not wish to sell the plate and the buyer knows this. Can I put the reg on retention but still let the buyer drive the car away. any advice on how i can resolve this quickly would be good
    Thanks All

Ring the DVLA in the morning but you may be too late to complete the transfer for tom

You have to go to the DVLA and fill outa retention form, will take them a week to process and they may need to see the car, to check ID.

It can be a bit of a pain, especially if it the first time the plate has been moved.

Ring the local DVLA office for your area, they are very helpfull....well mine was

    its a nightmare...

Ideally you should remove the plate and get a prefix plate from DVLA before advertising the car as it can take upto 2 weeks for them to change the plate and issue a new plate/the old plate if still avaialbe.

The reason for the delay is that you need a new V5 document with the new reg on it before you sell the car.. Otherwise the reg goes with the car.. (also you have to inform the insurance when the plate is changed)

If you know the buyer you can sell the car to them with the plate on it.. then fill the rention form in BEFORE they send the V5 off.. wait for the new V5 to come back in YOUR NAME with the new reg and then complete the transfer owner section..

I don't envy you, when i moved my reg off my crashed MG Midget i had to get the car to the DVLA office for an inspection, the car only had 3 wheels left and no roof, no tax and not allowed to touch a main road!!!

    You know what to do.
When I changed my car I was in a similar situation. The DVLA told me it is absolutely fine to sell the car without the V5 form while the reg transfer is in the post. It happens a lot so they are cool about it. Think about it, when you part-ex a car you usually swap the cars in 7 days, and the transfer can take 2 weeks. You just need to complete the new V5 when it arrives and stick it in the post.
The only person you need to convince is the buyer. Luckily the buyer of my old car was my brother!

I bought my Ferrari with a private plate on. I agreed with the buyer to take it off.

He completed all the paper work with the DVLA and a month or so later the new documents came through. I sent him the old plates back in the post (sentimental value ) and bought the new ones with the new V5. I also had to get the MOT certificate stamped up with the reg change.

Thing is just make sure you agree it in writing with the new owner
