I am new to car buying and have amongst other cars tried and liked a a Golf 1.9tdi S five door (58) and a 1.6 FSI match 5 door (08). I could live with either so am dithering between them. I don't drive much, but did own a Golf at one time and liked it. I'm trading in my husband's 8 year old 320 BMW. The Golf it will be used for drives over 20 miles, or locally only when it's very cold and/or very wet and/or late. I know this sounds a daft question, but any suggestions about which would be the better bet and why please?

If your not doing big miles or will be doing colder weather journeys, the FSI might be a better bet as i believe the TDI likes longer journeys/warmer weather - I am sure others will say if this is wrong.

Other factors are that most FSI's do not have/need a cam belt change (they have chain driven engines instead) whereas the TDI needs a cambelt change periodically and the "match" trim will have quite a bit more equipment/creature comforts if you like that kind of thing, than the "s" trim,
