Hi was just checking my oil level on my audi a4 petrol 1997 and the dipstick just sits on top of the housing for it. When the engine is running you can see the dipstick shaking about. All of the previous cars I've had the dip sticks had some resistance to them when pulling them out. Is this normal for the model I have

The dip stick guide funnel is broken. For a 1.8 20v ADR engine the part number is 050 103 663 and from an Audi dealer they cost about £2. Be very wary of cheap replacements as they are a terrible fit and often snap as you try to push them down. When removing the old one, a ring of plastic often stays inside the metal tube and you will need to carefully fish it out to allow the new tube to click into place.

Just had the same problem with mine as I had oil spilling over. Got a new dipstick guide from Audi for £2.30 problem solved.
