OMG! nearly 2 hours to replace a side light lamp in my A6 C6 (adaptive zenons).
'What a joke' for a car built in a country where carrying spare lamps so that you can carry out road side repairs is a legal requirement, the design of the light unit and position is rediculous and that is the near side. The off side looks even worse.
If anyone has an easier way than removing expansion bottle, power steering res. and then standing on your head with your wrist broken so that you can get hold of the lanp holder please let me know. 'Im Knakerd!'

Friend, I feel your pain and sorry there is no other way, unless you have a very flexible partner with double jointed wrists and trust her not to snap something off!

The best way with the other side is to be brave put your hands either side of the ducting and pull it firmly towards you (up) and it does split apart, work your way down just popping bits off and you will get to the back of the headlights easier than the other side. putting it back together requires the same amount of persuasion!

Im in the process of swapping all mine to LEDs - last longer and once they are done hopefully it will outlast the length of time I plan to keep the car....

    Hi guys,

    I'm having a 2005 Audi A6 3.0TDI.

My drive side main dipped bulb has blown and I'm trying to replace it.

I tried Halfords and there are 2 types of bulbs - normal or gas discharge.

Question is that how do I tell which bulb do I have?

Also, if anyone have diagrams about replacing the bulb, kindly email me at ctanlk@hotmail.com

    Thank you very much.

    Cheers.

    Hi Mate,

I would suggest first off to take it to a dealer, they should replace it and it should only cost you the price of the bulb. My dealer replaced one for me and I was told that due to a design flaw and the fact it wasnt a 'insert generic end user here' 5 minute job.

Failing that, I think given the age of your car you will have Halogen bulbs (non gas discharge) but if you have Xenons you have gas discharge bulbs.

As far as changing out the bulbs, I can try and put together a pictorial for you to follow if no one else has done one yet.

Let us know how you get on! :

    Thanks man.

I tried to take it to a main dealer - Southend Audi. They tried to rip me off big time. They said that I had one with gas discharge and quoted me £150 + VAT to replace the bulb. They said alot of work is required to remove the headlamp to replace the bulb. I just think they are crazy!

Would appreciate some pictures so that I can have a go myself. Doesn't give me confidence that I'm reading posts about how difficult it can be and the need of a 'very flexible partner'. I'm afraid mine have a 'normal flexibility'.

    Cheers.

I think that gas discharge is the one with what looks like a crystal ball in a chrome ring and conventional hallogen is a normal reflector.
Either way you will need a crystal ball to replace any lamp in an Audi.
Recomend asking an indipendant specialist for a quote.

My local Audi dealer doesn't charge any labour for replacing bulbs - just the cost of the bulb.

They also told me that I could supply the bulb and they would fit it for free.

    Really?

    GOSH!!!

Where is this dealer? I don't mind travelling if it's not too far off.

    Cheers.

About 140 miles from Southend-on-sea so might be a bit far to travel to get a bulb replaced!

I'm surprised other Audi dealers don't offer the same service?

My local Audi dealership is owned by Inchcape - I think they also own other dealerships. might be worth checking if one of them is close by to you?

    Good luck!
