My new pass time, while driving, is coming up quite close to different models of car at junctions and in queues and then looking at my DRLs in the bum of the car in front. I've been doing this for a while, and I've not yet got bored...

I have been identifying good models and bad models of cars to get close to. I have also started a list.

Before anyone starts to get freaked-out... well, I don't care... it's my pass time and every man should have a hobby. Also, there is a chance for me to become some kind of world renowned (and respected) expert in this field. "There could be a paper in this..." as my boss used to say.

As a starter (with the caveat that I'm only 20mm lowered, not 30mm)...

List of car bums that the DRLs reflect well in...
    • Citroen C4 - excellent view of your DRLs - hardly distorted at all. But you get two reflections - one above the reg. plate and one below - double-your-money, double-your-fun.
    • Honda Jazz - amazing... there is a flat bit around the reg. plate that explodes and diffuses the DRL reflection... so you get two bright white coronas.
    • Vauxhall Vectra - if the Vectra has that shiny piece of metal strip - then it's very shiny indeed and the DRLs line-up with it (horizontally) perfectly.
List of car bums that the DRLs reflect not so well in...
    • Peugeot 307cc not good at all - the rear of the car seems to angle upwards, so you get nothing - felt cheated! Will not drive close to a Peugeot 307cc again!
I will probably add to this over time and keep it as a working document. I can see my blog getting a version of this too.
    Cheers, Hippo

Went on a few drives over the last few days... although I'm now happy with most of my desired music being in the car... I still wanted to keep my girlfriend busy and somehow stop her inane prattling on about things that are simply not interesting... (things like cows sitting down and a belief she's just seen a squirrel or a discussion about whether a girl pulling alongside us has pretty hair or what a street sign really means?!?!?) so I have done the necessary to bring her some way into my demented world.

Effectively, I forced her - pretty much completely against her will - to sit quietly in the passenger seat for quite some time and watch out for the S line's LED DRLs shining in the bum of cars that we came close to... and also to formally record this data onto a piece of paper I had printed out for her... as well as rating them with a smiley or unhappy face and making relevant [read: useful and absorbing] comments about the shininess or placement of the reflections.

This is the output of her efforts... (please do excuse the handwriting quality - we were on the move and I was also deliberately not driving smoothly - I've told her it's the CVT gearbox and she believes me!, for the time being):

She seemed to get quite into it after a while, asking what the different parts of a car were and suchlike, yet she has still adamantly refused to help further my research in the future. I think that I can turn her mind on this, or resort to pressure or blackmail of some form.
    Cheers, Hippo

I followed a golf today (current model, whichever Mk that is) and at just the right distance you can see yourself both right way up and upside down thanks to the curve of the boot.

Nice addition, that, to this collaborative distributed non-profit research project!

There could be a paper in this!
