Today i was coming home from Pizza Hut, Approaching a roundabout and all of a sudden the engine stopped, Completely, No Lights on the dash, just died completely. However after turning the key over, all is well? Just took it for a long drive and fine, not an inch of problems. This is the first time its happened to me, i have read of others talking about it on here.

I dont wanna give up on the car, since it is lovely to drive. The car wasn't previously abused, infact it was a middle aged women owning the car...the car has full service history

    Engine Code: AHW

Things i think it may possibly be,

    -ECU Related Fault?
-One of the sensors? But surely this show up on Diagnostic's? Would the fault be 'intermittent' as it is

The main problem i have with this is, that the car's fault is intermittent so its very unlikely the fault is gonna show up on diagnostic's scan. There is no liquids being lost from the Engine. From what i have read/understand these cars were riddled with faults, i was 17 (low insurance) when i first got the car and it drove immaculatly, im not a 'boy racer' nor do i rev the nads off the car. Anyone with abit of common sense realises that you couldn't possibley go fast enough in a '1.4' Golf to crash. The only way i can desribe a 1.4 is, Imagine a big lorry, with a 1500CC engine? (This is with reference to other similar vechiles on the market)

you must do a diag test to elliminate any faults
for it to die completely it must loose power to ecu
it may be the power up relay but do diag test

When engine is cold look at the RPM's. Commonly if there is a problem with the Throttle body of vaccum pipe then RPM's wont be stationairy

Theres no lights on the dash, which would suggest that the ECU doesn't realise the car has died, and therefore wont record a Fault Code? I think the fault is Electrical, rather then mechanical. If the problem was throttle body related, surely all the lights on the dash would appear, after the car had cut out.

And its an intermittent fault, you can drive it some days and it drives like a dream without a single fault.

    Hi,

Just a thought. I have a 2.0 GTI 8v and had a similar problem last year. Intermittently, all instrument lights would go off, though the dials and all external lights worked fine. It turned out to be a lose/faulty connection in on the drivers side of the centre console. When my leg brushed against the centre console when the car was stationary it completed the circuit and hey presto, lights came on. With no pressure applied all instrument & centre console lights died. There was a lose wire touching the outside of the ash tray causing the fault.

    Hope this helps.

Thats a useful piece of information, but did the car completely die? meaning that it required you to turn the key, to start the car again?

No, didn't completely die, just internal lights failing.

Sounds like it could be a little more serious....
