What HU did you originally have, DELTA CC?

Your car is too early not to have both +v feeds, double check the pinout on the old HU.

This list of pinouts for Audi head units may be of use.

It is most likely the Delta CC on a 96 car.

With the correct pinout you can check if your battery and switched feeds are correctly wired into the HU, you will notice some do not even have a both feeds.

You can also identify the anti-theft wire in the original connector, and ground it on the back of your HU.

If you are still having no joy, i would wire into alternate batt & switched power sources from behind the dash, maybe routing wires to an unused bit of the nearby fusebox.
