heres a weird one, got golf 2.0 automatic, with o1m transmission, when in drive car struggles to go above 40 mph , using gearbox manually, can attain reasonable and illegalspeeds but when shifting into D for normal use the revs fluctuate wildly between 2500 and up to redline depending on speed, gave oil change on box removing black obnoxious fluid and replacing with new, but still no improvement, any ideas????

The simple truth is that Volkswagen make a terrible automatic gearbox. I have the same problem.
If you want a proper dependable auto, then go japanese - toyota / honda.
