If anyone can help shed some light on this problem I'd be very grateful.

I've taken ownership of a 2000 S6 Avant automatic. Its just done 82,000 miles and it has just started to refuse to go into reverse gear. All forward gears fine, no noise, no rattle, no transmission fluid smells, just no reverse gear. I've taken it to Fontain and they said there was no fault code on the VAGcom, no bits in the gearbox oil so their view is I need a new gearbox and torque convertor, £3,300 for a recon or £4k for new fitted.

Can anyone shed some light on possible other faults / solutions ? Is this a common fault that others have suffered and moreover can anyone recommend where else I can get the box replaced for less than a whopping £3,300 ?

I love the car so will get if fixed but this is alot of money !

Thanks to anyone who can help I'll keep you all posted on progress.

Sad to hear your box go so early . From what I heard as soon reverse goes it needs repairing...
I have 5 speed tip box in my car and got it refurbed for under 2k few years back in Tottenham, still runs fine (Audi allways say refurbed boxes don't last).
http://brittanic-autos.co.uk/ , decent guys, did a clean job, no new scratches on car, cheapest I could find.
Give them a ring, see what they can offer.

Nah, mine was still fine at the time , but bearing in right flange had gone, so box had to be removed just to change that. And then I decided to do refurb same time, thought sooner or later had to be done.
Mine's got 170k on the clock..
