    Chaps,

On the 2 B8's I have demo'd (2.0T and 2.0TDI) I have engaged the key in the dash and then pressed it again to start.

I have noticed in some pic's recently that below the handbrake switch there is a start/stop button.

Is this a MY10 thing only on some models?

Are you looking at pics of the advanced key vehicle, as opposed to the vehicles that you test drove which if they were recent models with the STOP/START function(opposite side from handbrake) as hill-hold assist is normally behind the handbrake switch?

How does the advanced key work then- do you just keep the key in your pocket and it unlocks the car when you approach it?

Does it sense the key remotely inside so you just start and stop the engine with the button?

    Sounds a cool gadget!

Exactly that. (although you need to put your foot on the clutch as you press the button)
And... its a VERY cool gadget.

It shaves valuable seconds off leaving (if you've done a bank job) as in one movement you can press the start button as you head for the seatbelt and by the time you clunk-click the car is started ready to go.

As you stop. Press the button, engine goes off, but everything stays on until you open the door to get out - then Power down. wipe the sensor on the door handle and it locks.

All too easy, i want something similar to enter my house.

Excellent- hope I get a B8 loaner on Saturday with this option when I take the car in for it's MOT and service

As for clutch- the Freelander2 at work has start/stop button and took me ages to work out you had to push the clutch down to start engine!

That's exactly how my wife's 53-reg Mégane worked, but she now has an 09-reg one (I know, she's some kind of francophile masochist and finds it impossible to drive Golf / Leon / A3 as her knees bang the steering column...). In the new one, you don't even need to touch the door handle to lock the doors - you just walk away. About 2 metres away, the proximity sensor triggers the locks with an audible warning, a flash of the indicators and you hear the locking. She loves it - the key never leaves her handbag.

I didn't go for this as I believe it would add "valuable seconds".

Rather than press the START button, I just push the fob in. I don't see any difference in time.

Getting in the car - I blip it before I get there so no time difference.

Walking away from the car - I walk away and then blip it whilst I'm walking. I do not have to touch the door once I've shut it earning me at least 0.5secs.

I thought that's how the Audi would've worked.

    Unlock as you get close.
    Lock as you move away.

    A little dissapointed.

Although I guess there are them times when say unloading the car. You pop the key in your pocket and start to take the shopping out. You walk indoors and the doors lock. While you put the bags down you tell a family memeber to help, although they can't until you get back outside - as it's locked? (I'm just trying to look for a reason why Audi's implementation is better!! ha). When said family member gets to the car and it's locked you could always just press the button on the key to unlock again...
