Hey guys, I hope you dont mind me posting this in the GolfMKIV section. Its just I havnt had any responses in the Polo bit and I know they did the same (if not very similar) engine in the GolfMKIV. So was looking for some help and information hopefully!

    Anyway...

Im currently looking with my girlfriend at a 2005 (55 plate) Polo MKIV phase 2 (the facelift version) with a 1.9TDI 130PS engine. Ive found an ex lease company car in solid red paint with 81,000 miles on it for £7000.

It does have a lot of extras on it though, its got cruise control, electric sunroof, electric rear windows, ESP, rear parking sensors and climate control.

Its got full service history and ive seen the print out, had the cambelt changed 4000 miles ago and they changed the brakes and new tyres 10,000 miles ago. It looks fairly good condition bar a couple of chips and alloy scuffs.

Firstly, I was wondering what do you guys think its worth? I kow with high mileage it shouldnt be that high but it has a few extras and its from a independant dealer not private. So what do you think we should be looking to pay for it?

Secondly, I want to know what people think of the engine! Is it reliable? Anyone had any problems with it or know of anything I should look out for?

I just dont want to end up with a broken car or ripped off! Would be good if anyone who has the engine could let me know if they have had any problems. Also if anyone knows about service intervals and prices it would be useful!

    Cheers guys

    Hi Malaroo,
As far as i am aware the Polo never came in a 130ps derivative and the fastest one they did was the 100ps (Pferdestärke) (which is about 99bhp). Having said that given the weight of the Polo it is still comparitve performance to the 130ps in a golf.

The engines are sound enough and you will hear stories of 200,000 miles + but the key is servicing. If it is left unserviced it will die very quickly. I change my PD oil every 5000-6000 miles, yes costly but your MPG stays high (mid 50's) and engine wear is minimalised.

I have checked Glass's guide for you and based on the info you have a 55 Plate polo 1.9tdi sport with 81k is about £6000 this is for a 5 door model with no extras that you have specified. The extras wont add on £1000 so if you are seriously interested in it, go in with an off of £6k. Then he will no doubt haggle you up, dont forget the other extras too, 12 months warranty that you want AS STANDARD and 12 months tax and a nice valet and set of mats. £7k is strong money but sadly dealers will command this sort of price because believe it or not, there are a shortage of second hand motors out there.

Servicing is done two ways 1. Time and Distance and 2. Fixed Interval.

    1. Time And Distance
    ****************
The car decides when it needs to be serviced based on the mileage it covers versus the time it takes to do it. The display will say "Service Oil" when it's ready. Dont worry though, you get a countdown (eg... 3000 miles to service).

    2. Fixed Interval
    *************
    Every 10,000 miles.

    Hope this information helps.

Hey there, yer this helps a load! Thanks for the detailed reply thought one of you might know about the engine. The engine is definitely 130PS (look on http://www.parkers.co.uk/cars/specs/...px?deriv=31497 for info on it, the one im looking at is a 55 plate manufactured october 2005.). They only manufactured them in the face lift polo for about 1 year. Its like a rocket believe me!

Yer, its been serviced regularly on the variable service I believe (its had 3 services up to know and just had its cambelt changed and the front rubber suspension bushes changed). So im hoping it will last for a while.

Yer, I was thinking of offering £6000 and seeing what they say. Id be happy to settle for £6250-£6500 I think though. As you say the warranty, tax, valet and mats included!

Theres definitely a shortage of these cars, but I believe they've had the car a little while now so they may be glad to get rid of it. I know someone came to look at it but didnt want it. So I could be in a strong position.

thanks for the reply and Ill post up if I get it

Personally speaking, after reading a contributing to the Mk4 forum since getting my Mk4 130 TDI and knowing what I know now, I'd be very wary of a car that has been on a variable (20,000 mile) service schedule and done 81,000 miles. What does the service book say?

What do you mean "what you know now"? doesnt sound good lol.

The service books got all the stamps in etc. and shows whats been done. I cant remember off the top of my head though.

Hope it isnt a major problem

I stand corrected, they did indeed make a 130PS version. Thats just crazy! my golf is like
s**t off a shovel so i can only imagine what this is like to drive.

After looking at Autotrader, it's not the cheapest by far, but the one you describe is possibly going to be the one from Autoinfusion from Eastfields, Bristol?

If so, looks like a cracking motor must just a bit concerned about the very garish red interior !!

Did you know for the same sort of money though you could get into a Golf TDI Mk5?

This has done 90k, fsh for £6495? 2.0GT TDI 140PS

    Whatever you decide, good luck!

There are LOADS of threads regarding oil, engine wear (more specifically the of the cam). The PD engines are very sensitive engines and require the proper oil to be used.

It is generally agreed by the experts on this forum, that to give the engine the best chance of longevity, the oil (and filter, obviously) needs to be changed every 5,000-6,000 miles. Even though the oil change is at a fixed interval, it is recommended to use an oil that meets VW's 507.00 spec for PD engines. This is the LongLife III oil.

If the car has had its oil changed only every 20,000 miles, I'd guess you'll soon be paying out £££'s in the not too distant future.

    Servicing is easy. See: https://www.vwaudiforum.co.uk/forum/s...ead.php?t=7845

Yer, thats the polo we're looking at! It is quick believe me, a lot of fun!

Yer its annoying about the possibility of getting the golf over the polo for same money, im hoping to knock them down on it though. However, also I already own a MKV golf myself so my girlfriend didnt want to have the same car as me (girls... want to be individual!) and also she wants a smaller car (and she likes the polo) and it has to be diesel because she doesnt like driving small petrols... like to be able to keep it in the same gear and go! (so basically torquey engines!). I will get her to give the golf a thought though....

Interesting about the comments on the oil... so I should be changing the oil evry 6000 miles if I get one then? How much is that sort of thing gonna cost me to do? I dont even know which filter I would need!

Thanks again for all your help guys, helping me make a more informed decision

Nah, didnt get it in the end they wouldnt budge on price and £7000 for pretty much 82,000 miles is quite a lot (even though it is an awesome car!)

Still on the look out for a 130 facelift polo though hopefully will find one with less miles or lower price
