The engine appears to have seized in my 1998 Passat Estate 1.8T 20V with 130k on the clock. The wife was driving at the time and she describes a knocking followed by a reduction in power and then seizure.

Im not sure what to do with the car as in other respects it is pretty straight and clean.

    Any ideas out there?
    Any potential buyers?

The car is in NE London.

    Thanks
    David

Drain any oil left. Fill it right to the top with diesel and leave overnight.
Drain the diesel and put in new oil and see if it will start.
It will probably not be as good as before, but will probably run OK and keep you mobile.

I would do as snapdragon says but with one difference. I drain and replace oil with diesel and leave overnight at least. Then I try to turn the engine over using the crankshaft bolt and a long bar or even a bar with a scafold pole. If the crank moves I turn it a few turns, then drain and refill with oil. Then start it. The sump will need to come off straight after to clean the strainer and fit a new oil pump. If you don't do that it will sieze again.

Thanks guys. Comforting to think you have the same idea.

Will this still work given that my engine appears truly locked. I rolled it down a gentle hill and dumped it in 2nd and 3rd gear. Both times the car bounced back on me. There is still oil in the sump.

It would be useful to know a chance of success before I go down this road.

When this doesn't work I drop the sump, loosen the big end caps and then turn it over on the crank bolt. Done this on various makes of car, sometimes got away without replacing a single part. Depends on your luck.
