LT SDi won't start

Hi my 1998 lt sdi 2.5 AGX engined van is off the road, having work done 4 mot, went to move it the other day and it won't start! turns over fine, puffs of smoke come out exhaust but van doesn't souund like its trying to go! and after about 4 attempts to start of around 15 seconds cranking the immobilizer light comes on, vag come only says engine blocked by immobilizer as the only fault! and it clears and stays out till 4th or fith attempt! its pumping diesel, it is now taking a feed from a fresh jerry can of fuel, and appears to be pumping, anyone any ideas please???????

puffs of smoke from the exhaust would tell me that fuel is indeed going in but not igniting. first thing i would do is to check the glow plugs using an amp clamp to check what current they are taking. there should be about 10 amps going to each, reducing to about 6 after a few seconds when they are hot. without an amp clamp, you can remove the connections and check the resistance through them. a short blast of easy start fired into the inlet manifold should get her going and confirm that the glow plugs are the culprits. if easy start doesnt work, its not the glow plugs and something else is wrong.

hi sorry it starts off easy start, as soon as u stop spray in it cuts out, and u get that locking affect when the glowplugs ignite the stuff before the engine is turning

check the pump belt at the back of the engine. remove the centre console then the plate thats behind it, then the cover over the belt. i had one doing the same as yours, and the belt had a few stripped teeth, resulting in the pump turning, but not complete turns. pump belts often dont get changed with the cambelt , resulting in failure. from the front of the engine, the one i had looked fine and you could see the pump turning and the belt looked ok. it was only when the panel was removed the damage became obvious.

hi again, all new on belts n tentioner only fitted a month ago genuine vw kit fitted.

anyone any help on this? wondered if the trasponder has gone down but vag com shows the key as authorized!
