Two things, it is a 97 Golf 3 1.9D estate, not a Golf 2. Secondly, get it read for fault codes and this will probably tell you what is wrong. On the 1Y engine this is done in Diesel pump electronics control unit (address word 41) not Engine 01 as with TDI engines.

Ta, do you know whether this is a garage only job or are some mobile mechanics geared up for this? As you can imagine getting it garage is a prob.

Most mobile mechanics can do fault code reads but most garages who do a scan on these turn round and say there is nothing to scan so if that happens it may be that their equipment won’t read Address 41. VAG-COM will.

£97 for a fault code read!!! Are they taking the **** or what! Take it to an independent VAG specialist or any decent garage with a fault code reader. Changing parts on guess work when the car has (albeit limited) diagnostic capabilities is stupid advice to give someone.

The “Automatic glow period control unit” is above the relay plate with the number 144 printed on top, the “glow plug relay” is at position 12 on the relay plate (lower row, first on the right) with the number 104 printed on top.
