    Hi All,
My 1.9 golf diesel has, for as long as ive owned her, had intermittent glow plug dash light, but always started. but the last 2-3 times ive fired her up there have been no g-plug dash llights and she's been reluctant to start. I changed 2 g-plugs about a year ago (couldnt reach the others) and have a fairly new battery. 10 mins ago i had the lid up and wiggled some wires!! turned the key, fired up straight away but no dash lights, rev counter or fuel gauge for 2/3 mins then back on?? Pls any replies in basic as im not that mechaniical!!
    thanx j

sounds like you have a bad earth somewhere.

i like the wiggle bit that made me smile, but you might be on the right track.
check the main black wire from the battery to the car body and to the engine, remove them and clean them up if they look rusty in anyway.

grab hold of test meter if you can and connect it black to body red to one of the glow plugs, set it to 20 volt dc.

switch the ing on and see if it reads any sort of voltage going to the glow plugs.

best to do that on a cold engine thats not been started for 12 hours.

if you get a reading for 10 to 15 seconds the glow plugs are working and it might just be a dead bulb in the dash or bad earth to the dash.

davey. thanx 4 reply. I thought that the fault had gone as i had a day of dash light on and then nxt time all lights on except g/plug light and wouldnt start! Ive not had chance to try her today but will, Ive checked the main fuse that looks ok. someone suggested the relay or even the ignition switch?!

Or the coolant temp sender. You haven’t clarified the bit about a 1.9?

Men, thanx for responces, id not been bak as it was all ok again, but last fri i turned the key all dash lights on but no g/plug light and i didnt start. Id liketo avoid the costs of a mobile mechanic, Like i said before ive given temp sensor + "other" wires a wiggle, checked fuse etc. Ps crasher i bought her as a 1.9 non turbo diesel.
Many thanks in anticipation of your suggestions. j (:-<

So it has been converted to a 1.9? You need to check or replace the coolant temp sender, wiggling it is as much use as rubbing it over with hand cream.
