Had a great trip to Weston today, from Walsall (near B'ham).

Total 224 miles there & back, average 48mpg doing 70-75 mph with 4 plus me in the car & a bit of traffic on the M5 by Bristol. Not bad I think.

The car drove superbly as usual.

The poise & quality feel of the Passat on the road are superb & still impress me.

What the hell has happened to lane discipline though.

Loads of people now hang in the Middle or outer lanes oblivious, holding everyone up

There's a big climb on the M5 & there were two idiots doing about 50mph in both right hand lanes while the inner lanes (there's 4 in total) were free. This caused serious problems as most people were cruising at 70 so were coming up behind & braking.

GET IN THE LEFT LANES WHEN ITS CLEAR YOU STUPID PEOPLE!!!!

Nice to hear someting positive from a Passat owner for a change. I love mine as well, can't think of anything I would swap it for!

was the tide in or out? every time I go it should be called weston-super-mud!
Also if the outside lanes are full, use the inside ones!

That's exactly how I felt. The only thing I wanted (A4 avant) was out of reach and nothing else really compared. Getting another in CC guise.

Lane discipline has gone to sh!t. There is a stretch on the A78 at Irvine that I regularly travel on which for about 2 miles is three lane. You can tell that people have the "can't be bothered moving over 'cause I'll need to move back shortly" attitude.
I pass them on the inside, a heinous crime I know, but this is the only location I would attempt such a thing. Unmarked Police cars regualry patrol this area as it is a bit of a racetrack too. But it never seems to put people off. If I get pulled, I'm quite willing to take a fine or points for this but I'm going to make a point.

So its not just the northwest that has gimps hogging the middle lane then, i end up bombing up behind them if they arent doing 70mph and flash my lights to get them to move out of the way. Either that or if its dark then i will drive right up behind them and flick on my spot lights to intimidate.

Intimidation is not the way to deal with the type of drivers who hog the middle lane, and in my opinion that makes your driving as bad as them, and also creates a bad atmosphere on the carriageway and that's how accidents happen. Two wrongs don't make a right.

While middle lane hoggers need to learn the rules of the road, trying to educate them yourself using these methods is not recommended, but that's just my opinion.

totally agree, I've only been driving for 4 years (next month!) and I've already learnt there's no way of educating idiots like this. Putting your car and yourself at risk is pointless. move to the outside lane, overtake and move back in. Leave the hoggers doing what they do best.

That is downright dangerous driving that makes you more dangerous than the idiots hogging the lanes,do you know the stopping distances for the sort of speeds you would be driving at.

Also blinding the driver in front with your spotlights would be classed as dangerous driving by the police.

I havent been driving for 2 minutes, i passed my test in 1997 and have got a clean license with no points.
I have never had a single accident and i dont intend to, perhaps the way i worded my post was a little negative, i do flash people to get out of the middle lane if they are hogging it why shouldnt i? i pay my road tax and dont see why i should have to drive round people who arent even doing the speed limit in the middle lane.

This is the bit that was scary quote:Either that or if its dark then i will drive right up behind them and flick on my spot lights.

As you say you probably worded it badly the part where you said drive right up behind them, but at the end of the day you are saying what most of us are saying that they are a pest and a danger to other road users.
