    Hi,

I have an 07 multitronic 2.0 TDi (my first auto) that I've just bought to replace my 05 TDi manual. I'm noticing that it revs pretty high first thing in the morning and seems unwilling to change up (in Drive) - it tends to rev to about 2300 rpm even when I'm not accelerating and going down hill. Also, with the paddleshift it is sometimes reluctant to change up even though there are plenty of revs (over 2000). I've worked out that, under normal circumstances, it will change up at about 1600 rpm with the paddles.

It's also way, way thirstier than the manual, and the best I've got on a run is 42 mpg....I'd have got mid 50's in the manual.

Has anyone had any similar experiences?

By the way, I have taken it to my dealer who 'can't replicate the problem'....which is a common response!

I'd expect the revs to climb when it's using the auto choke but not nearly that high!

Does it do this every time you start?

Yes, but only for the first few miles. It's almost like it doesn't want to shift up. Very strange.

A friend of mine has just sold his brand new A6 Avant 2.0 TDi multitronic after just six months because of problems with the gearbox which Audi could not solve. I will try to get the details for you.

Thanks for that - it'd be interesting to know what problems he had.

I wouldn't go near a CVT. As much as I'm a fan of Audi this is going to be a huge White Elephant for the company. There are simply way too many problems with multitronics, especially the diesel variety, and it's only a matter of time before Audi will have to answer a lot of questions from a lot of people, including the mass motoring media. I'm not sure they'll welcome the attention, but they should have thought of that before changing to the multitronic. That 'Vorsprung durch Technik' credo is sounding a bit hollow at the moment.

To the OP: sorry to hear of your problems. I sold my m/tronic as quick as I could and bought a newish manual (Audi). It was either that or return to the older torque conv. auto-style, but I didn't want an older Audi.

Good luck, cos I'm afraid you're going to need it.

Thanks for taking the time to respond. The auto has settled down now and seems to be going pretty well. the early morning high revving seems to have gone, and the fuel consumption is getting a bit better...though still a way off the manual, especially on longer trips.

Hopefully all in the garden will be rosy.......

Multitronic is clever enough to provide automatic engine braking when going down steeper inclines, maybe you are experiencing that. It won't drop revs like an old fashioned torque converter just because you have taken your foot off.

I must say that I love my multitronic gearbox, although it may be better suited to the bigger engine. I only get a slight high revving on cold mornings when the car hasn't been used for a couple of days. It seems to be related to gearbox oil temperature or viscosity, goes as soon as it's done a couple of miles.

My friend's car would not select reverse. Audi agreed there was a fault and wanted to change the box. My friend wanted to reject the car and they agreed to differ (short version of the story!)

I also had a work colleague with an A4 multitronic. His had a delay of about three or four seconds before it responded.

He nearly killed himself when pulling out of a junction in front of a car which wasn't there when he first pressed the accelerator........
