    HI,
I think I need to change the head gasket on my A6 1.9TDI 2000, as I'm getting pressure in the coolant expansion tank, but no other symptoms.

I'm told that I need to remove the bumper to be able to get enough room to change the headgasket, but looking at it I think I can get in (it will be tight), can anybody confirm this?

Also if I cahnge the head gasket, I assume I need to change the bolts, but what about any other gaskets. The head gasket seems to come on it's own and there is another gasket set, do I need it?????

Also how long should it take to change and is there anything I need to be aware of?

    Any advice greatly recieved.

What makes you think its the head, waterpumps are known to fail and the stats
have a problem, they stay closed.
Could be something easier to do than a HG.

The car does not overheat, the temp goes to 90 degrees and sits there all day. If the pump or stat were at fault then surly it would get too hot and overheat.
Also there seems to be alot of pressure in the system.
If I do need to change the head gasket, is it such a big job as some people say, I've had a quick look and it does not seem to be toom much trouble.

The front of the car will need to go into the service position and some special to type bolts/sliders will be required to support it. You will need locking tools for fitting the timing belt/belts depending on the car so I would need the engine code and year to be able to give you the diagrams to help you on your way. Hi
Engine number is AJM 406974 Dec 2000.
I'm assuming it's the head as I can;t see any other explination. I have replaced the expansion cap, with no difference to issue.

no you don't remove the bumper. You slide it 4 inches forward into the service position. only takes me about 15 mins to do, and make access really .

I use the bumper fixing bolts to support the bumper in the service position as I don't have a set of the service bolts. just takes a little longer to sort out the alignment when you put it back, but you can just line up using the dirt stains on the bracket holes
