Econ stays on for a number of reasons, it protects the system when theres a fault.
    Get a re-gass first.

    Hi,

There are quite a lot of threads covering this topic on the B6 / B7 A4 forums (and A6, A8 etc which use the same aircon system). Have a search, but in short; it could be a fault with any one of the following
    • The system needs re-gassing (hope there isn't a leak somewhere!)
    • The pressure sensor (behind the passenger headlight) is faulty and needs replacing (a very common reason for the ECON light being stuck on)
    • The compressor is faulty and needs replacing (ŁOuch)
    • The condenser is faulty and needs replacing
    • The evaporator is faulty and need replacing

    Hope that helps
    Al.

I've got the same problem, took it to Nationwide Autocentres to get a full aircon service and regas, but they said that their automatic gassing system would not start as there was a fault! They didn't have time to find out what was wrong, but I guess I need to find out if it is any of the other items listed.

How would I find out if the pressure sensor is faulty?
