    Hi all, Im looking for a Golf TDI, I have been told that the 150bhp's are prone to camshafts breaking? Is this true? I was told this by someone selling the 130bhp so im not sure if hes trying to put me off looking at a 150? Thanks

    There are a few threads on here covering this (130 or 150 purchase etc). Basically, the 150 has the same engine as the 130, but the turbo and intercooler on the 150 are bigger. The 150 does seem to suffer problems more than the 130 though. The failure of the 150 over the 130 seems to be down to the wrong oil being used and/or long service shedules (Every 20000 or so miles!).

    Ive got a 150. I love it to bits. I use VW's Quantum Longlife 3, but change it every 6000 miles. Ive never had any cam issues (Touch wood!).

    Whichever you go for (130 or 150) DONT touch any with a bargepole that have not been run on the correct pd spec oil OR have been on a long life service shedule!

    Longlife service shedules are when a car has only been 'serviced' (And so the oil changed) every 20000 or so miles! That does an engine no good whatsoever!

    Looking at the service book will tell you how often its been servived (The more ofter the better!). If its been done by VW, they should have used the correct spec oil. If its been done by an independent, ask the seller about the oil, but not directly. See if they mention the special oil these engines require. If not they probably wont know, and so the car may have been on the wrong stuff!

    These threads should give you more info;
