    Hello,

First post. I recently bought a second hand passat s tdi 130 auto (52 plate) and have a couple of issues that I would be grateful for advice on.

Occasionally when I put my foot down hard on the accelerator, the car doesn't pull very well, as if the turbo isn't kicking in. The engine then stays in this state until the ignition is switched on and off and then all seems to be fine again. At no time are there any warning lights on the dash.

Secondly, when pulling away from stationary, and regardless of how gentle or hard I accelerate away, a cloud blueish smoke is emitted from the exhaust(presumably smoke?).

Are either of these issues something to worry about?

    Thanks in advance.

The lack of power is the engine going into limp mode probably because of a turbo fault. You need to get a code read done to find out if you have over boost or under boost. Once you know, people will be able to give you more useful advice.

Thats your turbo on its way out. I suggest you check your engine oil level quickly. DO NOT DRIVE YOUR CAR STOP NOW AND YOU CAN recon your turbo. CONTINUE DRIVING and you will need a new one. i know a very good recon place lmk

If it turns out to be an overboosting turbo when you get a code reading, a search on the forum will lead to plenty of solutions - I had similar symptoms which turned out to be a turbo overboost problem - great advice from forum members saved me £1000!

odds on its a dirty/sticking turbo , get some innotec cleaner £38 delivered and follow the instructions ,
its a bit of a fiddle but not too hard to do.

the turbo may respond to the cleaning or it may have go for a rebuild , but it worked for me.

    Thanks for the useful advice.

I'm getting it looked at during the week to see which, if any codes are being registered and also having the turbo looked at.

    Well, had it looked at.

It was logging a fault 17965 which apparently corresponds to P1557, something to do with pressure control deviation. Apparently an overboosting issue.

They had a quick check of the pipes and they may have spotted a loose one, so that will be getting replaced later in the week. They also put in some diesel fuel additive to see if that would help the smoking issue.

Bit of googling led me to this:
    http://wiki.ross-tech.com/index.php/17965/P1557/005463

    Which has:

17965/P1557/005463 - Charge Pressure Control: Positive Deviation

    Possible Symptoms
    Reduced power output
    Limp mode

    Possible Causes
    Boost Pressure too High
Hoses/Pipes incorrect connected, disconnected, blocked or leaking
    Charger Pressure Control defective
VNT (variable nozzle turbo): nozzles stuck
Solenoid Valve for Boost Pressure Control (N75) defective

    Possible Solutions
    Check Hoses/Pipes to/between Components
Check Solenoid Valve for Boost Pressure Control (N75)
Check / Clean / Replace Charge Pressure Control
Check / Clean mechanism for variable nozzles

I'm not particularly knowledgeable, but it looks like something to go on.

Overboost is not likely to be due to a loose pipe. The most likelt faults are faulty MAP sensor, faulty MAP solenoid (N75), faulty VNT actuator or stuck vanes in the turbo. On rare occasions a blocked pipe running from the N75 solenoid to the air filter can cause this. The most likely cause as already suggested is stuck turbo vanes.
