    Mk1 Fiesta (cracked engine block)
Volvo 340 (friend had an off-roading incident)
    Rover 216 (terminal rust)
Volvo 340 (gave away to my brother)
Vw Golf mk3 1.4 (accident damage prior to my ownership)
    Fiat Punto (head gasket failure)
Vw Golf Mk3 1.6 (still running!)

doesnt make good reading, i never crashed any of these, they all died - with the exception fo my current golf which is dying, though not dead yet - in my ownership. i've only been driving for 6 years!

also makes fairly dismal motoring history doesnt it?

    DKM,
My history is not much better and I have been driving over 28 years. I too owned a Volvo 340 (though only once ) for my commute to and from Barrow-in-Furness. My excuse and sticking to it as it was reliable but a POS to drive

    Hi Malc,

mine were both very comfortable and fairly reliable - one of them was only accessible via the boot for some while as both door mechanisms borke within a week of each other but as it was a 22 year old car i forgave it, besides, it was a brilliant anti-theft device!

not exactly rewarding to drive though. best moment was power sliding at 5mph in the snow one year! that was fun

got 150k out of the 1.4 before it gave up after some amature (me) tried to re-build the cylinder head and it never worked properly again.

so, who else can top my 'dream garage'

There are a few roundabouts on the A590 towards Barrow. Yes the Volvo could be quite tail happy even at reasonable speeds in the wet. Put it all down to experience. Everything worked that should of worked on mine it was was ultra reliable and even the 1.7 engine returned good mpg, high 30's but then it was 90 miles one way and mostly motorway.

I wrote it off on the M61 in black ice parking it in lane three to be rear ended by a Rover, fortunately at that point I was on the central reservation watching. I remember doing a 360 and at one point seeing the bonnet flick up and the spare wheel bouncing across the motorway. It was an odd place to put the spare wheel

I followed it up with a 1989 Renault 19 Energy (1.4). Reliable until the end but even worse than the Volvo to drive. Both these car were 20 years old at the time so it does say something for old technology, said it many times but there is way too much E-lectrickery on cars these days

hahaha, yes it was a bot of an odd place to put the spare wheel, still with it removed there was TONS of access in the engine bay. poor little volvo, that sounded like a bad way to go!

i am definately in agreement re old cars, all this electronic sorcery is all well and good until it goes wrong, i havent been on this forum for all that long but have lost count of the number of people with mk3 gti's with dodgy ABS lights! and thats just the beginning. give me something comfortable and mechanically simple any day.

oh wait, i drive a Golf mk3 CL....

Now I maybe getting confused with another car but on the 340 did the bonnet flip up frontwards? Loads of room but I have a thing about standing at the front of a car and accessing the engine bay (assuming engine in the front).

Re old cars, just been discussing that very thing at work. One guy buys a new car every three years (gets very good reliability) another chap, his neighbour buys Ł250 old bangers and get good reliability, street cred differs massively I would think

it did indeed, it was hinged at the front - an early form of safety consideration perhaps? designed so that if you hadnt closed it properly it wouldnt flip up at high speed and smash your windscreen in?

    never really caught on...

even if i cost were no object i would still opt for the Ł250 bangers, at least when something does go wrong you can console yourself it is cheap to replace (and insure for that matter) and it wouldnt be a surprise. also, you dont need a degree in computer science and a diagnostic computer to work out what is wrong with the Ł250 heap of junk.

have to agree with the street cred point though, i dont mind the ridicule but some will. i get a lot of stick from a bloke i work with who lives a few doors down - i am often out fiddling with the car at weekends and he takes great pleasure pointing out his 52 plate mondeo never needs tinkering with.

his last MOT (2 weeks ago) cost him Ł750 after the brakes were condemned and a caliper had to be replaced. my Skip sailed through with a sheet of advisories but no failures

    oh the irony
