I have an A6 2004 3.0TDI Quattro that has just done 41,000- miles. It has a full Audi service history.

The issue is that one of the timing chains has snapped causing severe damage to the engine.

    My questions are:
Would it be expected for an engine that has done only 41,000 miles to experience failure of the timing chain?

Has anyone else experienced this type of problem?

What kind of mileage would one expect from a fully serviced V6 3.0TDi diesel engine that does not experience a timing chain failure?
    ]Rgds

I have heard of a few going and just caught one on a customers A6 3.0 V6 petrol before it let go as I could hear something was wrong, not so easy on a TDI though due to the noise.

Complain to Audi, they may step in and pick up the tab or a least some of it, particularly at such a low mileage. Regards Peter

I would be mortified if my car's timing chain failed at ~40k miles.

There's been a pretty serious failure there, or a design fault.

I'd be giving Audi a right hard time about it. Especially as it has full Audi service history. I'd take it to the dealer who serviced it last.

I used to be a Toyota mechanic, and on the old 18R engines there was a manufacturing defect which caused timing chains to fail. We had to replace the timing chains with new ones, free of charge. So there is hope.
