    Hi,

First post on here but post on gtiforum under the same id. Currently have a mk3 8v Golf GTI but I'm looking at getting a TDI Passat for a daily commute for a new job.

It's a '06 plate 2.0TDI model and the owner tells me it's the 170PS version. Question is, how can I verify this online - will a HPI check reveal the BHP? I've done the mid, car tax checks etc but have none giveaway the bhp. I guess it can only be done by the chassis number somehow? Anyone confirm how this can be done?

Also, it has 65k on it and from all I've read cambelts are 80k or 4 years whichever is first. Is this true for this model? In which case I'm good for another 15k or until next year.

    Thanks!!

I don't think HPI will give the BHP, but the manual code or the code inside the spare wheel well should.

    Anyhoo - if it's the 2.0tdi, it'll be the 140 or 170.

What reg is it as the older 140 will have pipes that bend slightly downwards and the 170 has straight pipes. Also the 170 has a red "i" in the TDi badge. Ask for a photo of the back...

You could always ask the local dealership if you supply the reg - they may cite Data Protection, but if you ask nicely, they may just confirm the BHP for you.

Try to verify from the owner what trim it is as the 140 comes in S, SE and sport spec - and the 170 comes in SEL and Sport only (I think).

And cambelts are indeed 80k - Allow for about £3-400 for the work too.

    Hi,

If it is a 170 it will definitely have straight tailpipes and a red I on the TDI badge. Going from memory the 170 engine was introduced later in 2006, so if it is a 170 it would have been one of the very first ones sold. Checking Autotrader I can only see 170's on a 56 plate.

Deinitely worth checking the logbook on this one.

Thanks, interesting about the red i, I never knew that. I'll ask him when I arrange the viewing.

Hi All, I'm not sure log books can be relied on. My 55 plate 2.0 TDI was described as a 105ps on the log book until after confirmation with VW I got it changed to 140.

Cambelts were originally 80k/6 years. They have been 60k/4 years for some while (3 years-ish?) now. My dealership confirmed this to me without hesitation face to face recently. So it should have been done or failing that must be done before purchase or £3-400 knocked off the price for you to get it done without delay.

For reference logbooks use kW as oppose to bhp or PS, as such a 140 TDI is around 105KW and a 170 TDI is around 125Kw

The below is a handy calculator for the conversions

    http://www.statman.info/conversions/power.html

Logbook for a 170TDI would certainly read 125Kw.

Hope this helps, no idea why they use kW though!

Thanks for that useful bit of info richardg158.Like God the DVLA move in mysterious ways! Anyway they changed my 105 to 140 so perhaps they are as confused as I was!

Don't quote me but wont the 170 have a different engine code to 140? My 140 is a BKP. If you have a HPI will it show the engine number? I know the log book will.

coming up for 4 years its due for cambelt and a brake fluid change (every 2 years) and I think they may recommend air con service (but that's up to you entirely)
