When I got my 1998 A6 Avant 2.5TDI the rear offside window wouldn't go up and down. I put up with it for a while and now decided to fix it.

Stripped down the motor assembly manufactured by 'Brose' to find something very strange. Electronic control module fits into the side of the regulator motor. Four tork screws hold it in place and it pulls out. Long circuit board has female blade connectors to engage with the brushes of the motor and hall-effect devices to sense the rotation of the motor. I looked into the motor having pulled out the electronic module and couldn't see the brushes!!!!

Removed the motor from the worm drive unit and found the motor brushes are mounted into a white plastic moulding that had been fitted exactly 180degrees out - the 0.25" blades were facing AWAY from the electronic module and not pointing towards it. I rotated the brush housing so that the blades now pointed towards where the electronic module fits and remounted the motor.

I could now see how inserting the electronic module engaged with the blades for the brushes. Motor now turned when I actuated the window up/down but only turned one way. I removed the electronic module again and resoldered the pins on the little circuit board. Refitted the electronic module and hey presto I have a working window - but with one exception.

When you push the switch down the window goes up, pull switch up and the window goes down. Exactly round the wrong way. All the signals going to the electronic module in the regulator are correct, it's only the direction that the motor turns that is wrong!

I notice there are drillings in the circuit board of the module which appear to 'configure' it (the drillings cut through copper tracks at the point of manufacture) - possibly to define the controller for right hand or left hand motor rotation. Does anyone on this forum know what those configuration drillings are for. Maybe only a Brose employee would know!

I reckon someone in the past got a replacement window regulator for my car and maybe got the wrong one. When it went wrong someone took it apart and didn't put it back together correctly. Whatever, I've got the crazy thing in my back door and could do with some help before I might break it again for good.

Most electric windows that I have seen usually operate with a 2 wire system fro the switch to the motor. With the switch in say position up then one side of the motor is grounded and the other hot. When the switch is down, then the opposite occurs, with what was the hot side becomes grounded and the what was grounded then becomes hot. I am not familiar with this particular set up but I suggest that you check what is happening to the wires from the switch. You may only need to swop them over.

Unfortunately, this is an AUDI. There is an electronic control module inside the window regulator. Eight wires go to the window regulator to give you extra features like one-touch open and remote opening of the windows from the keyfob.

No James, Audi would never use two wires when eight will do...

As I explained, all signals to the regulator are correct. Its just the direction the motor rotates that is wrong which I believe is configured on the electronic module using drillings on the circuit board.
