Hi, I've just bought a Golf mk5 tdi se 1.9.

The rear windows are not electric like the front, they have window winders but they don't work. The driver's handbook shows all of the windows as electric. Surely VW did'nt make a Golf like this?.
Perhaps the previous owner has modfied the rear windows so that they cannot be opened?. Let me know if you have the answer. chas939

Early SE's had wind up rear windows - if they dont wind up something is wrong or is this a wind up!

Thanks for your reply. Its not a wind up. It may be that the rear windows have never been opened and they have stuck.

I was reluctant to force the winders in case I broke them.

I had thought that VW had fixed the rear windows in order to save money but that would ruin their reputation. Thanks again.

Is this a case of some kind of child lock perhaps, with the electric windows there is a button to stop the kids in the back doing the windows down, perhaps there is a lever somewhere where you can 'lock' the windows like you can with the rear doors.

Hi, I still have this problem. I just never use the rear windows which is a pain for the rear seat passengers.

I've had a close look at the rear door edges and there is a hole with a grommet and a sign that looks like you are meant to insert a screwdriver or some other tool to unlock the windows.

Let me know if you have any luck.

yeah, I tried that but it is only part of the door lock mechanism. I actually took the inner skin of the door off. I could see a pulley cable/wire which should operate the window but i couldn't see what was jamming it. Seems quite a big job to open the door further so I left it. Somebody must know????????????????????????

I've finally found the fault on the rear windows of my golf mk 5 1.9 tdi 2005.

There was nothing wrong with the window winders, other than the fact that they were just stuck.

The rear windows, as far as I know were never used, and the glass became stuck to the rubber.

The answer was to use fingers to push the window down while someone wound down the winder.

I suppose you could use WD40 or something similar to ease them.

After giving the window edges a good clean they now go up and down easily.
