Hi all, passat B5 1.9 tdi AFN 140,000. Gearbox crunches when changing from 3rd to 4th, all other gears fine, gearchange feels rather sloppy. Is it losing synchro or is there a fix for this apart from a new box?, changed oil 3 months ago to fuchs titan 75w 90, only slight improvement, gets worse the more you drive.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

    Hi there,

is the 'box less noisy when its warmed through or does this make no difference? if its less of a problem when warmed through it is probably the synchro going home.

I had a similar problem with 1st to 2nd gear with my gearbox but it was only when the oil was cold. i put some ZX1 lubricant into the oil and it was much better (and still is). its now like the oil is always warm.

I assume this does shorten the life of the box as the oil wont be as viscous but it helps quieten things down a bit. if the gearbox is on its way out it may be a good stop-gap until you can source a new box.

if you go easy on the gearchange and shift slowly does this help?

Hi, thanks for the reply, when the box is cold it will crunch but not as bad as when its warm, this seems to be the opposite of synchro problems i've read about on these and other forums, it would appear that these VAG boxes suffer from crunching between 1st and 2nd gear where mine crunches from 3rd to 4th, all other changes are fine. I was wondering wether it could be a linkage or selector problem and if anyone has has the same problem.Don't want to replace the box only to find out it was something simple.
