Has any one had a cracked head on a a4 tdi afn engine , if you use the car hard driving it throws out the water out the rad , but if your taking it easy it only needs a cup of water every second day , rad ok water pump seems ok thermostat ok , so its whats left the head gasket or cracked head , thing i have seen is the we pipe to the header bottle returns very little water if any ,and theres a little black crap on the under side of the water cap, no water in the engine oil , no white smoke on start up or any other time , fires on 4 from cold , just the head gasket ?

Hi there - just noticed your post whilst looking at something else. I had a similar problem with overheating - would overheat quickly but if I drove conservatively and kept car moving it would remain very hot but managed to get it home.

Changed theromstat still same problem. Checked on VWAUDI forum and someone suggested it might be the water pump - replaced the pump and WALLAH problem cured. The impellor blades are made of plastic and crack with age. It is a bit of a job to do as you have to basically take off the front of the car. If you haven't done it before I suggest using a Haynes manual.

    Good luck.

Exact same problem, how long do you have the car?

My head was corroded, they are an alloy head so the wrong coolant will corode the ports so much that coolant can get into the cyclinder.

Those bolts stretch when tighten so they could give the right torque readings without being fully right.
