    Ouch mate!
I am afraid you will have to check the whole wiring of the ignition cirquit. I have the same problem as you and I have double checked every item under hood except the ECU. I'm having this problem from two months now and yet nothing! I have swaped the idle control valve (in the body of the monoinjection or electric carb), manifold gasket, dissasembled and cleaned the carb, checked all vacuum hoses (swaped even the pipes that pressurise the fuel tank and their carbon filter also), changed the distributor, the high tension coil, spark plugs, O2 sensor, temperature sensor with the correct code, alternator and timing belts, engine timing checked also! The throttle positision sensor is fine as I can notice the gas lever (where the gas cable is hooked) repositioning when the key is turned on. Fuel pump sends a fountain of petrol when intake pipe is unhooked off the carb, hence pump is ok and the respective relay also.
And yet nothing! I am really ***off !!! The idling is still erratic and in a minute the engine shuts off. If temp sensor is unpluged idling lasts longer (8-9 min) but the engine stars "coughing" badly and shuts off after that! The only things I know I have yet to check is the wiring, ECU and ECU relay. VAG diagnosis did not help at all. It keeps displaying error codes on the distributor. If any one knows a magic spell to fixing this, please share!
    Good luck man!

    Hi crasher,

Sincerely I do not know how to tell the engine type. The little label on the engine cover is completely unreadable. It is a 1.4L petrol of '93 in a 1H cabin. All my problems started after a serious crash from a young tester of a 2.8L MK4 VR6 that destroyed 6 other cars with mine beeing the first in the death row!!! I managed to rebuild (not by myself) all the cabin and replaced all the parts I have mentioned in a post above. Yesterday I consulted (free of charge) a petrol engines engineer with 30 years of experience and he suspects the timing of the engine is slightly not in synch with the distributor. That makes the engine loose rpm fast and cut out. So I will let him open the engine cover and match every piston positiion with the proper distributor hammer (or rotating arm) position. According to him, the electric spark is delayed more than the distributor tolerance can fix by hand rotation (advance or delay). This causes the blast to happen latter, when discharge valves open the petrol keeps burning out of the engine hence the bad smell of unburned petrol, low power and later engine cut off. I will post the result ASAP.

    Thanks!
