You could find out by datalogging the car with some diagnostic equipment while driving, or having the contents of the ECU examined. You need to get that dump valve off and put a recirculating valve back on.

If its an atmospheric dump valve it causes engine management issues and can slowly destroy parts of the engine. I have a passat with the 1.8t engine and have left the standard bosch valve on it. Unless you want to start replacing turbos and such like trust me mate its not worth it. If you want the noise then simply but a cold air induction kit on it and you get wastegate chatter when you lift off sounds better than the pssssssssst! Just make sure if you do that you add a cold air feed from the front somewhere or you could lose power. Here is mine tucked in left hand side and cold air feed front left grille:

Yea even the most expensive ones do because there are sensors to detect how much air is being recirculated and if you have an atmospheric valve none of the air is recirculated! As for the cold air feed you could always put it behind one of the grilles in the front so you cant see it but the air still flows through it. The red looks ok with the red passat but I see your point about the R32 rep.
