GT TDI 130 Knocking noise...

Hey guys.

The past couple of days my car has developed a knocking, which sounds like its on the front passenger side area.

Its quite ramdom, sometimes louder than other times, doesn't really make any difference when in gear or not, coasting, clutch up or down etc.

It does get a bit louder when i put it back into gear and put some load onto it.
Sometimes its only faint, and sometimes i can hear it over the radio.


Any ideas?

Id get all of your suspension looked at. Droplinks, top mounts, ARB fixings, wishbone. Have the engine mounts checked, when the revs are loaded the extra play may be causing the engine or box to foul against somthing.
Also check your exhaust heat shield and exhaust mountings.

Just to add, today it got a little worse, and to describe more, it sometimes makes a loader knock when going right.
And also when rolling to a stop, it was a lot clearer, knocked every time the wheel whent round sort of thing.

Could well be the anti rollbar bushes... a common 'consumable'!

Just to let you know the passat forum has a lot of posts about this. My passat tdi 130 has done this for well over a year, iv'e had several mechanics look at, even had the wheel bearing changed. Then someone posted, that after 2 years they have found the noise.......whilst he was sitting in passenger seat (as a passenger), he jammed a cassette between the windscreen and dashboard, and the noise has been cured. Try this first, i'm to going tomorrow.

Hey guys.
Thanks for all the advice, on friday when i got to work, i found the problem.....

The front N/S wheel was loose! One bolt was missing, and the other 4 were loose

I have no idea why, as a few days earlier i swapped front to backs, having trouble getting them off, obv gunned up at a garage, i made sure they were done up sensibly, i know i did!

Very strange. Just glad i found it before being overtaken by a wheel!!
